Abstract in English
This work, qualitative in approach, used social representations and Marxist dialectic as its methodological frames of reference. Our orientation consisted of seeking to understand the work of members of a public health team who take tubal ligation as an objective of intervention. We began with the work of the team involved with surgical sterilization, viewed in the context of carrying out their work on a routine basis; we noted how the agents carry it out and what are their representations about it. The empirical data were obtained by way of interviews and observations of some of the activities of the members of the team. The nine members of the public health team were interviewed: the public welfare worker, the public health agent, nurses, doctors and psychologists. Their discourses were subjected to analysis following the technical orientation proposed by FIORIN and adapted by CAR. We took as the principal categories for analysis the concepts of the process of working in the medical sector. We observed that generally the team was characterized as hierarchical. We noted that, as to the particular aspect of deciding about surgical sterilization, the team tended to become more horizontal, given the importance of the ethical dimension of the female sterilization, which sterilization tends to shift the focus from that of scientific and biomedical knowledge to that of the social sciences and the humanities. This horizontal form is only apparent, since the technical criteria are overriding in the light of the practical knowledge of life of the persons at the time of decision-making. Although a tendency for multiprofessional work exists, there was a type of strategic refusal as to interdisciplinary action and a convenient reliance on biomedical criteria.
