Uma investigação sobre a experiência de cirurgiões-dentistas idosos requer fundamentação teórica capaz de compreender como a profissão odontológica tem sido vivenciada, desde a graduação (décadas de 1960 - 1970) aos dias atuais. Este estudo buscou compreender a experiência de cirurgiões-dentistas de 60 anos e mais de São Paulo, em relação ao seu conhecimento técnico-cientifico sobre a Odontologia, ao longo de seu exercício profissional, bem como desenvolver e validar um modelo teórico-representativo da experiência dos sujeitos. O referencial teórico utilizado neste estudo foi o Interacionismo Simbólico, que é uma perspectiva da Psicologia Social, orientando o processo de reflexão, conferindo sustentação ao desenvolvimento da pesquisa. O referencial metodológico adotado foi a Grounded Theory. Participaram da pesquisa oito cirurgiões-dentistas, com 60 anos e mais, que atuavam no serviço privado, público, na gestão, no meio acadêmico ou que já estavam aposentados. Os resultados permitiram o desenvolvimento e validação de um modelo teórico explicativo da experiência. representado pela categoria central BUSCANDO SUPERAR DESAFIOS E LUTANDO PARA ALCANÇAR OS ANSEIOS que integra três momentos na vivencia dos cirurgiões-dentistas. O primeiro representado pelo período pré-ingresso na Faculdade de Odontologia e ilustrado pela categoria: ESFORÇANDO-SE PARA SUPERAR DIFICULDADES. O segundo momento refere-se à experiência da graduação em Odontologia. representado pelo fenômeno: BUSCANDO SUPERAR DESAFIOS.· E o terceiro momento consistiu na vivência após a graduação e é representado pelo fenômeno LUTA DO PARA ALCANÇAR O ANSEIOS. Os conceitos identificados contribuem especialmente para ampliar a compreensão da experiência de cirurgiões dentistas com o conhecimento técnico-cientifico da Odontologia, proporcionando subsídios para melhor entender como a Odontologia vem sendo construída na vida destes profissionais, e de maneira interacional, com a sociedade como um todo, usuária deste saber teórico e prático.

A research of the experience of elderly dentists requires theoretical foundation to understand how the dental profession has experienced since graduation (years of 1960 - 1970) to today. This study sought to understand the experience of dentists with 60 years and more of São Paulo, with the technical-scientific knowledge of dentistry, through their professional practice, and develop and validate a theoretical model, representati ve of the experience of the subject. The theoretical framework used in this study was Symbolic lnteractionism, which is a perspective of Social Psychology, guiding the process of retlection, giving support to the development of research. The benchmark methodology adopted was the Grounded Theory. Participated in the survey eight dentists, aged 60 and over who worked in private, public, in the management, academic or retired. The results enabled the development and validation of a theoretical model explaining the experiment, represented by the central category: SEEKING OVERCOME CHALLENGES and struggling to reach the aspirations which has three times the experience of dentists. The first represented by the pre-admission to the Faculty of Dentistry and illustrated by category: Strive to overcome difficulties. The second is the experience of graduate studies in Dentistry, represented by the phenomenon: SEEKING OVERCOME CHALLENGES. The third time was the experience after graduation and represented by the phenomenon STRUGGLING TO REACH THE ASPIRA TIONS. The concepts identified particular contribute to enlarge the understanding of the experience of dentists with scientific-technical knowledge of dentistry, providing grants to better understand how to dentistry is being built in the life of these professionals, and in interaction with society as a all, users of this theoretical and practical knowledge.
