A partir da conceituação e problematização de expressões envolvendo o termo "odontologia", investiga-se a origem, características e implicações práticas de um conjunto de "odontologias" surgidas no Brasil nas últimas quatro décadas. As propostas e ações decorrentes dessas "odontologias" no período 1952-92 são objeto de análise. O material empírico utilizado para esta construção analítica é constituído por publicações e documentos de variada origem e finalidade. O contexto epidemiológico e a magnitude dos interesses econômicos relacionados à problemática da saúde bucal durante os anos 80 são apresentados pois, ainda que se refiram apenas a esse período histórico, constituem aspectos fundamentais do pano de fundo histórico onde surgem, atuam e disputam hegemonia as propostas que se identificam com as diferentes odontologias, sendo imprescindíveis para compreendê-las. Apresenta-se, ainda, as características básicas do modelo de prática odontológica hegemônico no Brasil no período em estudo, e discute-se as perspectivas de cada uma das propostas de prática odontológica contra-hegemônica.

From the concept and questioning of the expressions involving the therm "dentistry", the author reserch the origin, features and practical implications of an array of "dentistries" that emerged in Brazil in the last four decades. The proposals and actions resulted from these "dentistries" in the period of 1952 to 1992 are object of analysis. The empirical material used for this analytical construction consists of publications and documents of varied origin and purposes. The author also presented the epidemiologic context and the magnitude of the economic interest related to the oral health problematic during the 1980's. Although they just refer to this historie period they are fundamental aspects of the background where the proposals, which identify themselves with the diferente "dentistries", emerge, act and dispute the hegemony. Those aspects mentioned above are mandatory to understand the "dentistries". At last, are presented the basic features of the dental practice model that is dominant in Brazil in the period of the study and it discuss the perspectivas of each dental practice counterdominant.
