A autora tece algumas considerações sobre os aspectos teóricos da educação contínua, baseada numa pesquisa bibliográfica realizada. Descreve também os primeiros ensaios de educação contínua realizados no Brasil, assim como alguns programas desenvolvidos com essa finalidade nos serviços de saúde e de ensino, em Natal. Apresenta alguns subsídios que poderão ser utilizados por essas instituições com o propósito de melhorar a qualidade da mão-de-obra de enfermagem, tendo em vista a elevação do nível de atenção de enfermagem prestada à população.

The author presents some considerations about the theoretical aspects of continuing education, based upon a bibliographic research. She also describes the first attempts to continuing education in Brazil, as well as some programmes, aiming this purpose, carried out in teaching and health services in Natal, R.G.N. (Brazil). Some subsidies on the subject, are offered to the above institutions, hoping they can improve the quality of nursing manpower, and aiming the ameliotarion of the nursing care level given to the population.
