Neste estudo procuramos coligir e analisar os principais dados e conhecimentos acerca da triagem visual de crianças pré-escolares e escolares. São apresentados dados de prevalência do problema oftalmológico dos pré-escolares e escolares do ponto de vista da saúde pública e as técnicas para detecção e resolução do mesmo. Foram analisados vários aspectos da triagem visual, o teste de Snellen, outros testes utilizados e critérios de seleção adotados em vários programas. Falso-positivos, falso-negativos e intestáveis formam um capítulo especial deste estudo. Aspectos administrativos abrangeram pessoal e sua formação, equipamento necessário e custo da triagem visual. Complementos à triagem incluíram comentários sobre o exame médico-oftalmológico, o seguimento das crianças e o componente educativo da triagem visual. Para ajudar a compreensão dos termos técnicos utilizados apresenta-se um glossário ao final do trabalho.

This study presents and analysEs data on visual screening tests of preschool and school age children. The data is evaluated in terms of the importance of visual problems in public health. Screening techniques for detection of visual problems are presented. Emphasis is given to Snellen test, as well as to overreferral underreferral and untestability. Consideration is given to human resources, equipment and cost of programs. Eye examination, follow-up and the education component of the program are also analysed, and a glossary is included.
