Abstract in English
Considering the severity of the occupational poisoning by the benzene, and considering the occurence of cases of poisonings among shoemakers in other countries, an epidemiological survey was done among brasilien shoemakers. The exposure to benzene was characterized by three parameters: first, the Preliminary Survey on Occupational Hygiene realised in shoe factories in Franca (São Paulo) and in São Paulo (São Paulo). Two different kinds of exposure were observed: the first one was a continuous exposure to benzene vapour and the second one was intermittent because they worked in their own homes. Then, 31 samples of adhesives utilizaed by shoe-makers were analised. Concentrations varying from to 0% to 7,68% of benzene were found and 35,5% of the samples presented concentrations above 1%. Third, the urinary excretion of phenol realised by gas chromatography was significantly elevated among the population working in the factories compared with the "control" group (Franca). There fore, it was not elevated among shoemakers that work in their own homes (São Paulo). The effects on health were evaluated by interviews about symptoms and clinical sings and by hematological exams. Some "cases of alert" were found.
