Na monografia apresentada, o autor procura ressaltar a importância do "Complexo Culex pipiens" dentro da Região Neotropical, descrevendo-a, segundo Lane e Forattini. Tomando por base os principais trabalhos encontrados na revisão bibliográfica efetuada, conceitua o "Complexo pipiens" como espécie politípica, citando os seus componentes e o modo pelo qual se separou, comentando a sua situação na região em estudo. Como importância médica e sanitária na região, o autor apresenta a filariose e o perigo potencial da disseminação dessa doença e algumas arboviroses, dependentes quase que exclusivamente de uma oportunidade, tendo em vista o crescente aumento das populações desse culicídeo. A sensibilidade dos mosquitos aos agentes etiológicos das doenças mencionadas, o controle e as perspectivas que se apresentadas, são abordados neste trabalho. O autor cita noventa e duas referencias bibliográficas, concluindo pela inexistencia de estudos taxionomicos e populacionais na Região Neotropical, como também, os insucessos da luta antivetorial, decorrentes da resistencia aos inseticidas e dificuldades inerentes a todas as regiões em vias de desenvolvimento. Assim, continuam os estudos ecológicos, sistemáticos e taxionomicos, carentes de coordenação e sobretudo, de pessoal suficiente e habilitado para esse mister.

In this monography the author tries to show the importance of "Culex pipiens Complex" in a Neotropical Region, describeing it as Lane and Forattini had done it before. By reviewing the main works about this matter, he finally concluded that the "Culex pipiens Complex" is a polytipic species. He writes about its elements, the way they divided and the situation in the geographic which is being studied. As medical and sanitary importance he presents the potential danger of the filariasis and some arbovirosis, depending almost exclusively of an opportunity to be disseminated. This dissemination may be caused by circunstances, considering the growing number of these mosquitoes. The sensibility of these mosquitoes to the etiologycal agents of diseases above mentioned and their right control are discussed in that work. The author cites ninety-two references from a vast bibliography, concluding by the inexistence of the taxionomics and populational studies in the Neotropical Regions, as well as by the failure of the antivectorial battle which is much more difficult because of their resistence to the insecticides. It is a hard battle when we work in developing regions. So the ecologycal, systematic and taxionomics studies should go on, but they require organization and people who must be able for this specific work.
