Abstract in English
The ecological observations on Pychodopygus intermedius carried out in the Ribeira River Valley, State of São Paulo, Brazil, revealed absolute dominance of the sandfly and its clear preference to artificial biotopes. In this particular, the experimental chicken roost located border of woodlands showed always higher density and on the served as a breeding site for both sexes. On the other hand, the populations showed a eurotype behaviour with a variable density in three biotopes where the quantity of rainfall seemed to have an important role. Finally, as Ps. intermedius have been captured within human habitations and those of domestic animals with a high density, it is quite valid to admit that there is a tendency towards domiciliation of the insect. Consequently, it assumes the condition of being the main vector in modified environments in this State where the residual woodlands contain active foci of cutaneous leishmaniasis.
