Method: Review of current literature regarding the subject followed by a case study involving the collaboration of 8 Brazilian hospitais to estabiish combined purchasing power as a first step in the development of a strategic alliance. Results: The formation of such a group was attainable because of the existing similarities between the hospitais involved such as: complexity of services provided, competition within the marketplace, and a common vision of the potential difficulties to be encountered in the near future. The combined buying activities are described. The approximation of the diverse institutions into a unified group with a similar objective was a necessary step in the viability of such an alliance. The results of this endeavor resulted in the exchange of information and the possibility for expansion of such an activity into other common settings. The perception of hospital directors regarding this initiative, its potential for development, advantages and disadvantages are detailed and analyzed discussing the relevance, pertinence, and viability of a proposal for a strategic alliance amongst healthcare organizations.
