Abstract in English
The growing in health and interventional programs for children, emphasizes the importance of family involvement, and, generates interest in amplifying deep knowledge regarding the families and their socio-economic-cultural context. Based on Bronfenbrenner´s bioecological model, this research aims to investigate day-to-day living reality, parents’ ideas of child rearing practices and education, in working class families with children with or without Cerebral Palsy. Ten families participated in this study, 5 having children with Cerebral Palsy, ages ranging from 2 to 7 years, with no evidence of mental delay, being followed by a rehabilitation center in Salvador city, and 5 families with similar characteristics but with nondisabled children. The data collection included structured interviews for mothers and fathers in different moments, recorded and fully transcribed, naturalistic observation of the environment, wrote in a field diary and observation of the adult-child interaction, through continuous register. The observation indicated similar characteristics in home environments for both groups with presence of many obstacles and architectonic barriers that makes difficult the dislocations for the child with a Cerebral Palsy. The analysis of the interaction process also indicates other similarities between the groups: 1. Beyond the sintonic relationship in both groups the majority of the children tend to be responsible for the feeding task and the adults for the bathing, suggesting that not only the physical disability, but also other factors, like the status and value of the task, could interfere in the responsibility distribution. 2. The use of order, directive strategy usually reported in literature as typical of the interaction between parents and children with disabilities, was the most used by the parents in this study to make the children perform the given task mainly during bath time; the question is if this parental style could be determined by the socio-cultural context, more than by the child’s characteristic. 3. The play activity was recognized as important for children, although mothers didn’t display much interest in it, except to prevent danger and inadequacies. On the other hand, the mothers of children with Cerebral Palsy are different from the others because they are unsatisfied with their children’s performance mainly in hygiene habits that they judge beneath their expectations in virtue of the physical disability. The same reason seems to justify a decrease in the exterior access for children with Cerebral Palsy. The fathers refereed involvement in child rearing practices but still seem to assume income raising as theirs fundamental function in the family’s dynamics. Thinking about an ideal educational system mothers from both groups tend to value extreme affection in detriment of authority. They also emphasize explanations, care and punishment. The fathers likewise value affection but tend to emphasize the use of authority and demands for the nondisabled children. The obedience is the most valued attribute of the “ideal child". The majority of the mothers evaluate themselves as being flexible in their relationship with their children. In addition the parents made efforts to elaborate their own experience in the education process trying to avoid repetition of bad educational strategies that made them suffer in the past. The results enabled the discussion of the relation between Cerebral Palsy, socio-cultural context and child rearing practices.
