The evaluetion of the effects of herbicides on aquatic fauna is crucial to improving our understanding of the impact of these substances on the diversity and ecology of aquatic ecosystems. Thus the aim of this study was to evaluate the chronic and acute effects of herbicides based on glyphosate on the survival of insects that occupy different aquatic compartments (Limnogonus spp.- pleustonic, Notonectidae sp. Nectônico and Chironomus inquinatus-bentônico). In addition, the effects of Roundup® on prey capture time on two species of Limnogonus were tested. The results show that the tested herbicides significantly affected the survival of the evaluated insects. For the pleutonic and nectonic insects, Roundup® negatively affected the survival. On the other hand, the effect of technical glyphosate was not significant. These results sugest that the surfactant may be responsible for the negative effects of Roundup®, since the reduction of surface tension can make it difficult the support and locomotion, decrease the effectiveness of the hydrophobic hair and compromise the spiracles of Limnogonus spp. and Notonectidae sp.In addition to survival, the negative effect of Roundup® was also reflected by the greater difficulty in catching prey in Limnogonus spp. exposed to this herbicide. In the case of Chironomus inquinatus, the three herbicides (Roundup®, technical glyphosate and AMPA) negatively affected survival. Our results show that although these herbicides are directed to weed control, they also have negative effects on the fauna of aquatic insects. Therefore, monitoring aquatic biota in agricultural areas subject to herbicide application is critical. The data collected in these monitoring can provide support for establishing controls and rules that minimize the negative impacts of these herbicides on aquatic ecosystems
