Abstract in English
The knowledge of the root canal system (RCS) is of utmost importance to achieve success in the root canal treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate qualitative and quantitatively the RCS anatomy of mandibular incisors by means of microcomputed tomography. The image acquisition of 283 mandibular central incisors (MCI) and 329 mandibular lateral incisors (MLI) was performed using the SkyScan 1174 microtomography device. These images were used to classify the RCS from type I to VIII, considering the number and location of the canals, according to Vertuccis classification. From this sample, thirty-nine MCI and thirty-five MLI were scanned with a resolution of 22.9 μm and reconstructed in order to evaluate the number and location of the main and accessory canals, according to Vertucci's classification, the bidimensional parameters of area, roundness, major and minor diameters of the root canal at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm from the apical foramen, as well as the three-dimensional analysis of volume and surface area. In the apical third, it was found up to three root canals; the area progressively increased from the apical foramen; the roundness ranged from 0.37 ± 0.21 to 0.52 ± 0.19 demonstrating the flat-oval shape of the canals; the major and minor diameters increased 95.45% and 36.36% in the MCI and 135.55% and 66.67% in the MLI, respectively. The threedimensional analysis revealed that in 76.92% of MCI and 85.71% of MLI the RCS could be classified according to Vertucci's, and type I (one root canal) was found in 46.15% and 54.29% of MCI and MLI, respectively. Ten new types of root canal morphologies were observed in 15.39% of MCI and 11.43% of MLI. The mean volume (mm3) and surface area (mm2) were 4.38 ± 1.97 and 35.59 ± 11.72 in the MCI, and 4.74 ± 1.33 and 38.91 ± 9.56 in the MLI, respectively. Accessory canals were observed only in the apical third in 46.15% of MCI and 28.57% of MLI. It was concluded that the microtomography is a non-destructive, reproducible and reliable method for the study of the RCS that allowed the identification of ten new types of root canal morphologies in mandibular incisors.
