Abstract in Portuguese
A cristalização do difenilcarbinol trifeni1fosfinóxido, C13H12O C18H15PO, ocorre no sistema monoclínico, grupo espacial P21/n; a = 11,074(4), b = 18,081(2), c = 12,887(4) Å β = 95,13(3)° V = 2570(2) Å3; Z = 4; dobs = 1 ,202(2), dcalc0= 1,193(2) Mg.m-3 µ(MoKα) = 1,370 cm-1. O trifenilcarboniol trifenilarsinóxido, C19H16O C18H15AsO, cristaliza-se no sistema monoclínico, grupo espacial Pc, a = 8,553(2), b = 16,179(4), c = 11,026(1) Å, β= 104,46(1)° V=1477,5(9) Å d=obs=1,315(2), dcalc=1,318(2) Mg.m-3, Z = 2, µ(MoKα)=12,48 cm-1.

Abstract in English
The initial part of this work presents a revision of the principal direct methods currently used for the solution of crystal structures. The determination of the structure of three adducts formed by hydrogen bonding is next described. The adduct p-nitrophenol triphenylarsine oxide, C6H5NO3 C18H15AsO, crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n; a = 8,847(1), b = 15,879(2), c = 15,704(2) Å, β = 100,47(1)° V = 2169,5(8) Å3 , dobs = 1 ,390(5}, dcalc = 1,412(2) - 3 -1 Mg.m-3 ; Z = 4; µ(MoKα) = 16,86 cm-1. The structure was solved by direct methods. The final R factor was 0.055 for 1337 reflections with com I ≥ 3σ(I). The adduct is formed by a strong hydrogen bond, with an 0-0 distance equacl do 2.555(3) Å and O-H-O angle equal to 123.9(4)°. The crystal of diphenylearbinol triphenylphosphine oxide, C13H12O .C18H15PO, belongs to the monoclinic system, space group P21/n; a = 11,074(4), b = 18,081(2), c = 12,887(4) Å β = 95,13(3)° V = 2570(2) Å3; Z = 4; dobs = 1 ,202(2), dcalc0= 1,193(2) Mg.m-3 µ(MoKα) = 1,370 cm-1. The structure was solved by direct methods. The final R factor was 0.0703 for 2060 reflections with I𕟵σ(I). Diphenylearbinol is bonded to triphenylphosphine oxide through an hydrogen bond with O-O distance equal to 2.672(5) Å and O-H-O angle equal to 146.26(6)°. The benzene rings of diphenylearbinol are disordered, the angles of libration around the C-C(19) and C--C(45) are 10.10 and 11.30, respectively. The final R factor was 0.059 for 1172 reflections with I𕟵σ(I). Diphenylcarbinol is bonded to triphenylphosphine oxide through an hydrogen bond with 0-0 distance equal to 2.672(5) %#197 and O-H-O angle equal to 146.26(6)°. The benzene rings of diphenylcarbinol are disordered, the angles of libration around the C-C(19) and C--C(45) are 10.1° and 11.3°, respectively. Triphenylcarboniol triphenylarsine oxide, C19H16O C18H15AsO, crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group a = 11,074(4), b = 18,081(2), c = 12,887(4) Å β = 95,13(3)° V = 2570(2) Å3; Z = 4; dobs = 1 ,202(2), dcalc0= 1,193(2) Mg.m-3 µ(MoKα) = 1,370 cm-1. The structure was solved by the heavy atom method. The hydrogen bond length in the adduct has a mean 0-0 distance of 2.72 R. The packing is disordered and the As and carbino1 C atoms occupy 66% and 64% of their sites of highest occupancy, respectively. In the three cases the structures were completed by the use of Fourier difference and refined by full matrix least squares. Finally, a discussion of the dependence of the strength of the hydrogen bonds which occur in the three complexes, with respect to the acid-base properties of their constituents, is presented
