Abstract in English
Introduction: It is the duty of the physical therapist to care for the patient in their entirety, including their living conditions, social and family relationships, going beyond the knowledge about diseases. Therefore, it was decided to approach the theme of sexuality observing the area of sex education (SE). This area is fundamental because it involves the establishment of a critical subject, knowledgeable of his own body, affecting his life in several phases by minimizing, for example, sexual dysfunctions. Main Objective: To evaluate the degree of knowledge, comfort, motivation and involvement of elementary school teachers regarding the promotion of SE in schools. Secondary Objective: To compare the results between teachers from different age groups, religious beliefs and academic background in SE. Methodology: The participants in the study were elementary school teachers selected by convenience and the Questionnaire of Sexual Education in School (QUESES) was applied. This questionnaire was developed in Portugal and assesses four dimensions concerning the promotion of SE in schools: knowledge, comfort, motivation and involvement of teachers. For a proper use of the questionnaire, we performed: Study 1 - Cultural adaptation, content validation and reliability and Study 2 - Construct Validation - Exploratory Factor Analysis: by means of a principal component analysis. To estimate the fidelity of the items, Cronbach's alpha was applied. Data analysis: Variables are presented as mean, standard deviation and frequency distribution. For the comparisons of means we used: scatter plots for the analysis of different age groups; ANOVA One-Way and Tukey's Post Hoc Test for the analysis of religious beliefs and Student's T-Test for Independent Samples considering academic background in SE. The effect size (ES), which is recommended in studies with psychological and educational variables, was calculated. Results: In total, 396 teachers participated, 77.5% were women, 63.3% taught in state school, 47.7% were Catholic and 93.1% declared themselves heterosexual. The teachers presented the following indexes for the analyzed variables: knowledge: 8,13; comfort: factor 1 = 4.79 and factor 2 = 4.12; motivation: subscales of importance = 5.16; self-efficacy = 4.61; positive beliefs = 4.88 and neutral / negative beliefs = 4.51; involvement: pedagogical practice = 2.90 and pedagogical function = 2.39. There was no association between age and initial academic background regarding the variables analyzed by QUESES. The ES indicated that religious beliefs had an effect on all analyzed variables, except for comfort. Practical Implications: QUESES is the first instrument validated for Brazilian Portuguese with excellent reliability, capable of verifying the knowledge, comfort, motivation and involvement of teachers in relation to SE in the school environment and can help in the knowledge about the practice of SE in the school, optimizing the involvement in actions, both in daily school life and in the development and continuity of public policies. Conclusion: The teachers have moderate knowledge regarding the legislation and ministerial guidelines related to SE, high comfort and motivation. There is insufficient practical involvement in specific actions as to SE, and teachers agree that it is part of their role to be involved in these actions. Religious beliefs had an effect over the studied variables, but the age and initial academic background in SE of teachers had no effect
