Abstract in English
In the chest drainage, the lack of confidence reported by the students may imply an increase in complications. It is not known which training model is more efficient for learning. Medical students, without previous chest drainage training, were randomized into three groups: pigs, cadaveric and synthetic models. Written test was done before and after training, in addition to a practical test, based on a checklist of standardized tasks, performed on the same day and six months after the training. A survey evaluated the satisfaction index and increased in self-confidence in performing the procedure after the surgical training. The laterality check was also recorded before starting the procedure. A total of 144 students were evaluated, 42 in the cadaver group, 34 in the pig and 68 in the manikin group. The groups were considered homogeneous in age, gender and intention in a surgical post graduation program. The written test scores, after training, increased in all models. The marks of the practical test soon after and six months after the training respectively were; 86 and 78 in the cadaveric group, 82 and 78 in the pig and 84 and 79 in manikin group. The laterality check of the procedure was: 78% in the cadaveric model, 45% in the swine and 84% in the synthetic model. The perception of self-confidence in performing chest drainage after training increased in all three models. Satisfaction was 4.82 in the cadaveric, 4.67 in the pig and 4.22 in manikins. Conclusion; the score of the retention practical test was similar in all three models. The pig model obtained greater lack of verification of laterality of the chest tube insertion. The degree of satisfaction was smaller in the synthetic model. Self-confidence in drainage and the written test marks also increased in all three models
