Abstract in English
The effects of a physical activity program were compared with antidepressive medication in elderly patients suffering from major depression, according to DSM-IV criteria. 30 outpatients were distributed in three treatment groups: medication (G1); exercise and medication (G2); exercise only (G3). Sertraline was used (50- 150mg/day) and a program of three weekly 60 minute sessions of aerobic group exercise. The GDS, MADRS and CGI tests applied every six weeks, during 54 weeks and the WHOQOL-brief test at the start and the end of intervention, demonstrated significant and indistinct improvement in the three groups, allowing us to conclude that the regular practice of aerobic physical exercise produces equivalent results to those observed with antidepressive medication in reducing symptoms and improving quality of life in elderly suffering from major depression
