Abstract in English
The Homeless Workers Movement (HWM or MTST, in Portuguese) is today the largest urban popular movement in Brazil. This paper has the objective to verify the hypothesis of depressive symptoms' reduction after people involvement in the collective actions in the MTST occupations. The methodological choice to reach the objectives was the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. A first data collection was made through questionnaires with individuals who were joining new occupations in the end of 2014 and beginning of 2015. The second part of the research has used the qualitative method. In this case, the data collection was made through individual interviews. In total, there were 268 people involved in the response to the initial questionnaire. In the second moment, the 15 participants who showed a larger remission in the depressive symptoms were invited to the individual interview. We analyzed: depression, anxiety, loneliness, social relation and religiosity. All variables considered, besides religiousness, presented variations. The results confirmed the main hypotheses established in this work's objectives: the relation between engagement in MTST's occupations and remission of depressive symptoms and the relation between depression and social isolation. The interviews show us that most of the participants has mentioned the reception and support found in the occupation as the most important aspect in their improvement
