INTRODUÇÃO: A promoção da saúde é um tema bastante discutido atualmente. A partir do referencial teórico da Carta de Ottawa (1986), este estudo prioriza o desenvolvimento de habilidades pessoais entre os idosos, um dos campos de ação definidos por este documento. As atividades de promoção da saúde do idoso consideradas neste estudo foram selecionadas em documentos oficiais brasileiros e estudo de literatura sobre o assunto. OBJETIVO: Discutir a inserção da promoção da saúde em práticas de vida de um conjunto de idosos de baixa renda, a partir de suas representações sobre promoção da saúde e a contribuição dos serviços. METODOLOGIA: Foi utilizada metodologia qualitativa, com entrevista semi-estruturada realizada com doze usuários idosos de baixa renda de uma Unidade Básica de Saúde da cidade de São Paulo, e com duas profissionais de saúde dessa UBS. Também foram registradas observações em diário de campo. Utilizouse como critério para seleção dos sujeitos o fechamento do campo por cotas e realizou-se análise de conteúdo e temática do material coletado. RESULTADOS E DISCUSSÃO: Os idosos foram caracterizados segundo aspectos sócio-demográficos e segundo as representações que apresentaram em relação a seu envelhecimento. Quanto às características sócio-demográficas, foi verificado que a totalidade era migrante; que os homens, na sua maioria eram casados e as mulheres, viúvas ou separadas (as mais novas); que as mulheres mais novas apresentaram redução da fecundidade. A concepção de envelhecimento destes sujeitos permite identificar aspectos biológicos (mudanças físicas e mentais), econômicos (aposentadoria e atividades produtivas), e sócio-culturais (etapa na trajetória de vida). A concepção de saúde destes idosos remete ao modelo de envelhecimento saudável. Em relação à própria saúde, referem benefícios das atividades de promoção da saúde no sentido de um bem-estar geral. Foram estudadas as seguintes atividades de promoção da saúde: atividade física e alimentação saudável; hábitos de fumar e uso abusivo de bebidas alcoólicas; prevenção de quedas; grupos operativos e de convivência. Destas, a atividade física, abandono ou redução do hábito de fumar e grupos operativos e de convivência foram as atividades abordadas de maneira mais enfática por este conjunto de idosos. Os serviços de saúde foram considerados lócus privilegiado para fomentar a promoção da saúde destes sujeitos, em particular na modalidade de atendimento Estratégia de Saúde da Família. CONSIDERAÇÕES FINAIS: Este estudo buscou contribuir para a avaliação e implantação de programas e atividades que visem à promoção da saúde de idosos, e também para estimular os mesmos a assumir uma postura ativa em relação aos cuidados com sua saúde.

INTRODUCTION: Health promotion is an issue widely discussed currently. From the theoretical framework of the Charter of Ottawa (1986), this study prioritizes the development of personal skills among the elderly, one of the action´s fields defined by this document. The activities of health promotion of the elderly in this study were considered based on official documents of Brazil and study of literature on the subject. OBJECTIVE: Discuss the integration of health promotion practices in the life of a set of low-income elderly, from their representations on health promotion and contribution of services. METHODS: We used qualitative methodology, with semi-structured interviews conducted with twelve low-income elderly´s, users of a Basic Health Unit of the city of Sao Paulo, and also with two health care professionals of this UBS. Were also recorded daily observations of the field. It was used as a criterion for selection of subject the closing of the field by quotas and was held content and thematic analysis of the collected material. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The elderly were characterized by sociodemographic aspects and by the representations made in relation to their aging. Regarding socio-demographic characteristics, it was found that all of them were migrant; that most of men were married, and that women were widowed or separated (the younger), and that younger women showed a reduction in fertility. The conception of aging of the subjects alows identify biological aspects (physical and mental changes), economic aspects (retirement and productive activities), and socio-cultural aspects (a step in the path of life). The conception of health of these elderly refers to the model of healthy aging. In relation to their own health, refer benefits of health promotion activities for a general well-being. We studied the following activities to promote health: physical activity and healthy eating; smoking habits and abuse of alcohol; prevention of falls; operative groups and socialization. Of these, physical activity, abandonment or reduction of smoking, operative groups and socialization were addressed more emphatic by the elderly. Health services were considered privileged locus to encourage the health promotion of these subjects, particularly in the modality of treatment Strategy for Family Health. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: This study contributes to the evaluation and implementation of programs and activities aimed at health promotion of the elderly, and also to encourage them to take an active stance in relation to their health care.
