Este trabalho procura compreender e explicar as transformações ocorridas na educação superior brasileira entre os anos de 1997-2006, tomando como estudo de caso os centros universitários paulistas. Para tanto, utilizamos os seguintes procedimentos metodológicos: a) levantamento de dados quantitativos consignados no banco de dados do Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas em Educação do Ministério da Educação, abrangendo matrículas e quadro docente dos diversos tipos de instituição que atuam no setor, tanto no privado, quanto no público, e b) entrevistas realizadas com reitores e/ou gestores de três centros universitários paulistas que representam diferentes categorias administrativas. As principais conclusões deste trabalho indicam que os centros universitários fazem parte de uma estratégia governamental da qual os centros representariam uma estratégia de atendimento da demanda por um ensino superior de massas e de caráter técnico-profissionalizante.

This paper intends to understand and to explain the transformations that happened in the Brazilian high education between the years 1997 - 2006, taking by example the occurrence of the univeritarian centrum of the State of São Paulo. For that we taken the following proceedings: a) putting questions about quantitatives consigned in data baseof the Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas em Educação do Ministério da Educação that encloses registers force from professoriate of differents types of institutions that operate in private and public sectors, and, b) enterview taken with rectors and managers from three differents representatives categories of the universitarian centers of the State of São Paulo. The main conclusions of this paper proposes that the universitarian centers constituent a government strategies of witch these centers support a caracter to comply a request for high teaching for professional and technichal character for mass.
