Abstract in English
The present study discusses the medicalization of school discourses. The research sought to evidence that the medicalization of school discourses has gained new contours as research in biology and neurosciences developed (from the mid twentieth century onwards), as well as discuss the ever-increasing use of medications, especially psychiatric, in the contemporary world. It provides evidence that the description of human phenomena, in terms of their organic functioning, contributes to the naturalization of school experiences, as well as to their pathologization. The work reveals that the medicalization present in the hygienist proposals of the early 20th century took place by way of disciplinary control and the moralization of educational practices, both in school and in the family. At present, however, widespread research in the medical field of neurosciences - which seek to identify in the functioning of the brain the foundations of learning and the explanations for psychic suffering- determines other contours to what has been called the medicalization of school discourse. As it addresses the forms medicalization has taken today, this study investigates the diffusion of medical knowledge throughout modernity, drawing on the studies by Foucault on disciplinary practices and on Bio-power. In addition to the theoretical review, this study analyzes the production of a media vehicle catering to teachers, magazine Nova Escola (New School), published by Editora Abril, in an attempt to demonstrate how the medical knowledge is embedded in the information presently provided to these professionals. The analysis of the magazine's production enabled the recognition that such information has adhered to a biological description of human phenomena and to a deciphering of the learning process in terms of brain functioning. Moreover, we noticed the spread of medical diagnosis tools as necessary information for the teacher to identify school-related problems in children. We observe thus a social demand for the teacher to be an extension of the specialist within the school. In the conclusion, we discuss some of the possible implications to education of the current presence of the medical knowledge in the pedagogical discourse. Building on Hannah Arendt's analysis of the transformations in the field of politics and on public space in the modern world, as well as on some contributions by psychoanalysis toward the thinking of the crisis in the education of our times, we underscore the deresponsibilization of adults for the formative dimension of education and the relinquishing of power to medication as a resource towards the carrying out of the educational endeavor in the contemporary world.
