O presente trabalho busca contribuir para a compreensão dos vínculos entre elementos culturais locais e a cultura científica na escola, investigando, junto a professores de ciências de um contexto teuto-brasileiro, como a cultura local e a cultura científica se fazem presentes e se relacionam em suas representações sobre os processos de ensino e aprendizagem em ciências. O texto traz uma apresentação de nuances históricas da colonização teuto-brasileira católica no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, abordando especialmente a relação do colonizador com a escola, a igreja e o convívio em comunidade. A cultura científica também é alvo de discussão, a partir de uma reflexão acerca do amplo leque de elementos que abarca e do complexo quadro que enfrenta para sua difusão no Brasil. Na pesquisa de campo, é investigado o cotidiano da educação, em especial, o ensino de ciências, no município de Salvador das Missões, RS, anteriormente integrante da Colônia Sêrro Azul, colonizada desde 1902. Os resultados apontam para características de uma comunidade em transformação, revelando, ao mesmo tempo, a intenção de manutenção dos elementos de identificação cultural local, historicamente constituídos e transformados, e, também a intenção de inserção cada vez maior na cultura científica mundial. O ensino de ciências na escola assume, neste meio, dupla função: por um lado, o de possibilitador de melhorias no cotidiano vivido localmente, pela sua ampla compreensão e reforço de valores e, por outro lado, importante e necessário agente de imersão na cultura científica.

The present work aims at contributing to the understanding of the relationship between local cultural elements and scientific culture in the school, by investigating, with Science teachers in a German-Brazilian context, how local and scientific cultures are present and related each other in their representations on the teaching and learning processes in Science. The text presents historical features of the Catholic German-Brazilian colonization in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, focusing the relationship between settlers and school, church and community life. The scientific culture is also discussed, by means of a reflection on the wide range of elements that are included in it and on the complex framework of its diffusion in Brazil. In the field research, the everyday life of the education is investigated, especially the Science teaching in Salvador das Missões (Rio Grande do Sul), which was earlier part of Sêrro Azul Colony, colonized from 1902 on. The results point to characteristics of a community in change, but, at the same time, reveal the intention of maintaining the elements of local cultural identity, historically constituted and changed, as well as the intention of being more and more included in the world scientific culture. The Science teaching in the school has, in this case, two functions: on the one hand, it enables improvements in the local everyday life, by means of its wide understanding and reinforcement of values, and, on the other hand, it is an important and necessary agent of immersion in the scientific culture.
