Abstract in English
The Polytechnic School (Poli), founded in 1893 and incorporated in the University of São Paulo in 1934, emerged by the initiative of the São Paulo urban elites in order to attend the economic demands of the early twentieth century, which required a consistent education with the country's industrial growth and the need of infrastructure improvements. Currently, the Polytechnic School proposes to form not only engineers, but "leaders". In order to identify the socially favorable predispositions of the students who became academically successful, the research had the general objective to uncover which are the socioeconomic and the education profiles that characterize those with first division formation (engineer formation) of the Polytechnic School of São Paulo, from 1899 to 1905. The research used the prosopographic method, or collective biographies, making a qualitative and quantitative analysis, which revealed the links between origin, social standing and school formation, as well as the common characteristics related to the social group that, having sought the Polytechnic School of São Paulo, reached its superior formation. As the main theoretical reference, the result analysis was based on the Pierre Bourdieu theories and his definition of the fields concepts, habits and capital. Besides this author, critical theory was also used as the basis for this dissertation elaboration and regulations and curricula analysis of the studied institution. In this way, it was possible to confirm the hypothesis that, following the tendency of the agrarian elites in São Paulo, Poli's first graduates originate from rural patriarchy traditional families, linked to coffee, but who sought to "modernize" and to "bourgeois", trying to keep up with urban and industrial growths. Thus, the quest for engineering training for the new generations was a movement to acquire the technical formation and the needed habit to maintain the family status quo in another social configuration.
