Several researchers have studied teaching science by inquiry and studies produced indicate this teaching approach provides the learner a learning of scientific concepts and procedures, as well as the development of several cognitive skills and the understanding of the nature of science. When we analyze the design of different authors on teaching science by inquiry, we noticed that we could draw a point of convergence between some aspects pointed out which characterize this approach. However, we noticed a difficulty to establish a consensus among other aspects, which are signaled. We observe there are a multitude of facets, which make up the design of different researchers and documents about education by investigation. Therefore, in this research we conducted a bibliographic survey to identify aspects that make up the conceptions of different authors on teaching by inquiry. We observed that in those studies had a multiplicity of conceptions about learning by inquiry. In order to organize our investigative didactic sequence, we noticed that the aspects that made up the understanding of the different authors could be arranged around the conceptual, epistemic and social domains presented by Duschl (2003). In this way, we have compiled the issues around these three areas. In addition, we made the distribution of these domains during an investigative didactic sequence. During our studies, we observed that the questions asked by the teacher could provide learner involvement in aspects related to conceptual, epistemic and social domains. In this way, we also concentrated our attention on identifying the questions asked by the teacher and their relationship with the distribution of the three domains during an investigative didactic sequence. From this perspective, our study aimed to provide a description based on a bibliographic survey of the aspects that made up the conceptions adopted by different studies on teaching by inquiry arranging them around the conceptual, epistemic and social areas. In addition, we aimed to provide a description of the distribution of these domains during an investigative didactic sequence, as well as its relationship with the questions asked by the teacher. From our studies, we proved that teaching by inquiry favors the involvement of students with conceptual, epistemic and social domains, and can be enhanced through questions asked by the teacher. In this way, we hope to contribute to the improvement of characterization of the teaching science by inquiry.
