Keywords in Portuguese
Educação infantil

Formação de professores
Sociologia da infância

Abstract in English
What is the knowledge that early childhood teachers explore to work music when they are not experts on the subject nor went through a professional learning in this area? Is it possible to identify this knowledge and seek insights that promote changes in established practices and build a musical work where the music is also thought of as an area of knowledge? Aiming to answer these questions this doctoral study work subject was born and its focus was the musical knowledge and practices of early childhood teachers. Its main objectives were to develop research based on the musical knowledge that was at stake in the educational action used by teachers with children, reflect on these practices and encourage them to work in harmony with the children's musical action. In weekly meetings for an entire school year teachers shared their work with children from birth to five years of age from two public schools in the southern city of São Paulo: a public preschool - EMEI, and a center of early childhood education - CEI. Given that the research topic chosen possesses a unique and multifaceted character, Music Education opened the dialogue with the fields of Teacher Education and the Sociology of Childhood. The first field gave the support on matters relating to the teaching profession and the second because of its intention of studying the cultures of infant pairs in order to understand the sociocultural nature of children's music. The investigation was developed using the participatory action research and the most important and significant result produced was the accomplishment of a "double listening": for music and for children. With the focus in understanding the specifics of music as a field of knowledge and the observation and sensitive listening to the music of the children, the research led to improvements and made possible for non-specialists teachers to develop a work with the music.
