Esta dissertação descreve os elementos históricos na formação do conceito de afasia representada pelo neurologista francês do século XIX Paul Broca. Nela foram introduzidos primeiramente os casos memoráveis de distúrbios da fala registrados há séculos, revelando um contexto médico, em que os conhecimentos anatômicos e fisiológicos eram incipientes, reinterpretados a partir de detalhes das narrativas clínicas da época, sugerindo que o fenômeno da afasia já era observado desde a antiguidade. Visando à reconstituição da trajetória histórica da cidade, que se tornou sede da ciência no mundo à época de Paul Broca, esse trabalho se concentra mais no contexto parisiense, destacando os eventos transformadores dessa importante capital francesa, retomando um pouco da sua história, da fundação da universidade de Paris e da Faculdade de Medicina, e seus fundamentos filosóficos pós revolução, mostrando substratos influentes na nova ciência médica, que produziram ambiente intelectual adequado para o desenvolvimento das teorias de Broca, em especial aquelas que lidaram com a doutrina localizacionista, conceitos de inteligência, memória, e dominância hemisférica, discutidas nas três monografias relacionadas com lesões no cérebro e a faculdade da linguagem. Por meio delas e da exposição dos debates, em torno da doutrina localizacionista em relação ao cérebro, esse trabalho expõe os fundamentos formadores do conceito de afasia na obra de Paul Broca

This dissertation describes the historical elements in the formation of the concept of aphasia represented by the nineteenth century French neurologist Paul Broca. It was first introduced the memorable cases of speech disorders recorded centuries ago, revealing a medical context in which anatomical and physiological knowledge were incipient, reinterpreted from details of clinical narratives of the time, suggesting that the phenomenon of aphasia was already observed since antiquity. Aiming at the reconstruction of the historical trajectory of the city that became the seat of science in the world at the time of Paul Broca, this paper focuses more on the Parisian context, highlighting the transformative events of this important French capital, taking a little of its history, its foundation. of the University of Paris and the Faculty of Medicine, and their post-revolutionary philosophical foundations, showing influential substrates in the new medical science, which produced an adequate intellectual environment for the development of Broca's theories, especially those that dealt with localizationist doctrine, concepts of intelligence, memory, and hemispheric dominance, discussed in the three papers related to brain damage and the faculty of language. Through them and the exposure of the debates around the localizationist doctrine in relation to the brain, this work exposes the founding principles of the concept of aphasia in Paul Broca's work
