Abstract in English
In a town of the south of Minas Gerais state, this dissertation aimed to describe memories and reports of disrespect to human dignity and to identify its possible relationship with resistance to domination. We seek to gather information about the history of the town, through written sources and, mainly, oral sources. Interviews were conducted with three individuals, aged between 78 and 80 years, using the procedures of life history and exploratory questions. Memories emerged from the 1940s to the 1970s. These memories evoked the period of economic success with tourism activities that involved the exploration of gambling and the use of medicinal waters, detailing the relations between metropolitan tourists and natives of the town. A multi-sport event called the Open Games, including details about its backstage, was recalled, which gained national repercussions until it was banned shortly after the civil-military coup of 1964; attempts to reimplant and replace it by another type of event. Authoritarianism manifested itself through autocratic governmental initiatives that directly affected the local economy. The narratives about disrespect for human dignity involved preconception based on social class, human rights violations and unemployment. The main forms of resistance reported were: (1) use of sport as an incentive to education and exercise of citizenship, (2) involvement of local public officials and politicians with left-wing militancy and (3) collective actions with the objective of maintaining new forms of tourist activities, to replace those prohibited previously
