Animal assisted interactions (AAI) may have cognitive, physical, psychosocial, communicative and educational objectives to the human participant, and consist in the incorporation of animals in therapeutic interventions or assisted activities. At present, the scientific literature provides some evidence that the inclusion of dogs to treat humans can have positive impacts on their physical and mental health. The effects on the animal envolved are, however, not questioned: the general idea is that these are good activities for the participant dogs. This study aims to elaborate the profile of dogs participants in AAI in the city of São Paulo, analysing their suitability for the role, and from the analysis of behavioral and salivar cortisol levels, investigate the effects of the participation in IAAs on their wellbeing, avaluating the stress which they are subjected during the sessions. Participated in the project 16 dogs who had been previously approved by the responsible organizations to work in AAIs. The project was carried on two phases. In the first phase two questionnaires and two padronized tests were applied, performed in the dog owners home, in order to trace the temperament profile and also to get information on the endocrine response to a standardized stressor for each of the dogs. The second phase aimed to investigate the behavior and endocrine response of the dogs during the AAI sessions in four health institutions, with three types of patients: elderly female nursing homes residents with diverse cognitive deficits, children and youth with severe autism and children living in a shelter home in vulnerable situation. Three AAI sessions were filmed in each institution for each of the four dogs, with different assisted humans. Five minutes of each of the 48 filmed sessions were analysed, and 23 behaviors described in the literature as related to stress were decoded. Dogs saliva samples were also collected immediately before and after each AAI session for measurement os salivary cortisol concentration by the enzyme immunossay method. The results of the tests, frequency and duration of behaviors, and salivar cortisol concentrations were statistically analysed. For the behaviors it was checked if there was significant difference between the frequency and duration 20 for the four experimental situations, for training time, the institution and cortisol levels if there was significant difference to the measures of the owners house and AAIs, and also before and after the session. Despite the statistic analyse hadnt indicated significant diferences in the frequency and/or duration of the behaviors between the control situation and the AAI sessios, unless refering to the behavior of lying with its head on the ground, that was significantly higher in the interaction in the owners home, statistical analysis of the salivar cortisol levels showed that, beyond the AAI levels have been higher than the houses level alredy in the beginning of the session, it increased even more during the AAI session, while decreased in the free interaction session in the owners house in the presence of an unfamiliar person. Moreover, the results of the C-BARQ test indicated that only 16% of the dogs in this study dont present behavioral problems. In contrast, 38% of the dogs received double red flags, that indicate that these animals, in relation to specific behavioral categories, received a less favorable punctuation than 90% of the sample. The results of the sociability test indicate high heterogeneity of the sample and several animals with little will to have contact with unfamiliar people, indicating flaws in the animals selection. The results of the study bring several relevant informations, that hadnt been evaluated by previous works, being important to the current brazilians AAI situation, since they suggested an increase of the dogs stress during the AAIs sessions. Together with the behavioral issues detected by the tests, the results suggest an inadequacy of the conditions under which AAIs are practiced in our environment, indicating an inadequacy potentially detrimental to the animals wellbeing. Preventive measures such as continued education of the conductors and supervision of the interactions must be taken to protect the security of the participant dogs
