Partindo dos relatos de atendimentos a pacientes idosos realizados em hospital público da cidade de São Paulo, bem como da experiência enquanto psicóloga aprimoranda da equipe de Geriatria do referido local, os objetivos da presente Dissertação são: caracterizar a velhice como etapa do desenvolvimento humano; discorrer a respeito das especificidades teóricas e metodológicas da atuação em clínica geriátrica sob o enfoque psicanalítico; discutir a problemática dos limites impostos pela percepção da finitude e da morte dentro e fora do contexto hospitalar; a influência do contexto sócio-histórico na constituição da subjetividade do idoso; e as características da interação da equipe de saúde no serviço de Geriatria. Apresenta-se a importância do conhecimento em Geriatria e gerontologia por todos os profissionais da saúde, bem como da comunicação entre os saberes nesse contexto. Reafirmase a importância do saber psicológico sobre a velhice e a inter-relação necessária entre os pacientes idosos, profissionais e familiares numa instituição em que a ordem médica é dominante e prima por excluir a subjetividade. O conhecimento de que existem limitações dos profissionais em lidar com o paciente idoso, comumente associado à morte, e o desinvestimento libidinal presentes estabelecem a necessidade de haver propostas de reflexões sobre o assunto, como a uniformização dos trabalhos e de seus discursos profissionais para atingir, progressivamente, os níveis inter e transdisciplinares de funcionamento nas equipes. Além da utilização dos instrumentos de exclusividade dos psicólogos, ou seja, os testes psicológicos para a avaliação e intervenção nos atendimentos, o profissional da Psicologia, no referencial em questão, tem como uma das tarefas a reafirmação constante da importância da inclusão da dimensão subjetiva na compreensão do paciente idoso diante de toda a objetividade presente no cenário do hospital

Starting from the psychological care of elderly patients in a public hospital from São Paulo and the experience as psychologist part of its Geriatrics care team, the aims of this Thesis were: define old age such as a human development stage; report regarding the theoretical and methodological particularities about the psychoanalytical approach in geriatrics clinics; the issues of the restrictions imposed by the finitude and death consciousness inside and out the hospital context; the influence of the social historical context over the elderly subjectivity; and the health care team´s relationship features on the Geriatrics Service. It is important that all the team workers have the knowledge about Geriatrics and gerontology, such as the good communication between them. The Old Age Psychology is one of the most important guidelines about elderly and the relationship between patients, family and the health care team, especially in an institution that the Medicine is prevalent and excludes the subjectivity. The fact that we know there are limitations of the professionals in dealing with the elderly patient, commonly associated with death and the lack of present libidinal investment, requests the creation of initiatives for changes, such as establishing common goals and languages between the different areas. Until we gradually achieve the levels of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary communications. Besides the use of particular Psychology instruments, the psychologist, inside the psychoanalysis reference, has the task of reaffirm the importance of including the subjectivity on elderly patient treatment, against all the objectivity of the hospital
