Abstract in English
In fluvial sedimentology, characterizing and establishing criteria to recognize fluvial styles have always been a recurring issue. By the collection of data of modern deposits formed by the lateral migration of active channels (scrolls bars), parameters that allow the recognition of the fluvial style were defined. In order to test the applicability in the rock record, a method based on the comparison of circular variance of active rivers with data from outcrops was developed. The method uses paleocurrent measurements to indicate the probability of a deposit being of a given fluvial style, based on the comparison of the dispersion and spatial variability of paleocurrents in modern rivers. Paleocurrent data collection must be systematic and stratigraphically controlled so that the deposits may be related to a single event of channel avulsion. In this way, two localities (Banzaê and Tucano) where the Member Banzaê of the Marizal Formation (Central Tucano Basin, in Bahia) outcrops were chosen. A total of four layers were considered in the research and were subject of this this study concerning directional data. A high number of paleocurrent measurements from each layer shows that the variance of paleocurrent ranged from 0,11 to 0,18. This result indicates that there is more than 70% of chance of the fluvial style of the deposit being braided, which is the same result obtained by previous works based on the analysis of architectural elements. The expansion of the method to other fluvial deposits of different ages must result in more consistent interpretations of fluvial style compared to the definitions based on facies models and depositional architecture. Additionally, the possibility of identification of anabranching systems, whose braided index varies from 1,5 and 3,4, by the use of the proposed method, must allow the recognition of this particular fluvial style, which has been underappreciated in the rock record, especially considering the fact that this is the predominant fluvial style of large rivers.
