As fontes geradoras de contaminação dos recursos hídricos são equipamentos e áreas onde se manuseiam produtos sólidos, líquidos e gasosos, cujas características físicas, químicas e biológicas implicam em danos aos bens a proteger, o que torna o levantamento das fontes, parte de um conjunto de estratégias que visam o controle destas e a proteção da saúde pública e ambiental. Face ao crescente número de áreas contaminadas registradas no Município de Atibaia/SP, aos inestimáveis atributos ambientais e à importância no contexto regional, escolheu-se este município de 126.851 habitantes e com área de 491 km², situado à nordeste da Cidade de São Paulo, para o trabalho. No que tange ao nível de avaliação das fontes geradoras de contaminação, optou-se por uma avaliação ambiental preliminar que permitiu ter o município como escala de trabalho. Os postos de gasolina, cemitérios, unidades prestadoras de serviços de saúde humana e animal, aterro de lixo, transporte de produtos perigosos, atividade industrial e agrícola e o esgoto sanitário foram as fontes abordadas, por serem de maior relevância em termos ambientais e de saúde pública. O resultado do trabalho mostrou não haver informações sobre as fontes geradoras de contaminação, indicando a ausência de posturas preventivas dos órgãos fiscalizadores estadual (CETESB) e municipal.

The generating sources of contamination of the hydrics resources are equipments and areas where solids, liquids and gaseous products are handled, and their physical, chemical and biological characteristics imply in damages to the goods to protect, what become the survey of the sources, part of a set of strategies that aim at the control of these and the protection of the public and environmental health. Face to the increasing number of areas contaminated registered in the City of Atibaia/SP, to the inestimable environmental attributes and the importance in the regional context, chose this city of 126.851 inhabitants and area of 491 km², situated to the northeast of the City of São Paulo, for the work. About the elevation level of the generating sources of contamination, it was chosen to a preliminary environmental evaluation that allowed to use the city as work scale. The gas stations, cemetaries, rendering units of services to human and animal health, landfill, transport of dangerous products, industrial and agricultural activities and the sanitary sewer had been the boarded sources, for being most important to environmental terms and public health. The result of the work, showed not to have information on the generating sources of contamination, indicating the absence of preventive positions of the municipal and state regulator agencies state (CETESB).
