Abstract in English
The objective of this study is to document and explain the inverted metamorphism of the Passos Nappe over an area of 2,700 km2 in the southern part of the Brasilia Fold Belt in Minas Gerais State. Structural analysis in the field, more than 400 thin sections, and microprobe determinations for geothermobarometry support my results. In the southern part of the Brasília Fold Belt, three tectonic units, one autochthonous and two allochthonous, are identified. These were imbricated by large thrust faults during Brasiliano orogeny about 600 Ma. The uppermost tectonic unit, the Passos Nappe, is mainly a psammitic-pelitic metasedimentary sequence, with minor associated tholeiitic basic rocks, metamorphosed to greenschist to upper amphibolite conditions. Two depositional cycle are recognized. Its lower depositional cycle is characterized by a mature sedimentation represented by quartzites and mica schists, whereas its upper depositional cycle had an immature sedimentation and is now represented by gneiss and mica schists with minor associated quartzites. The intermediate tectonic unit is a thrust system, mainly consisting of quartzites and phyllites, the Canastra Group, all in the lower greenschist metamorphic grade. Slices of basement rocks and of the Bambuí Group, its metasedimentary cover, are included in the thrust system. The autochthonous tectonic unit has two parts: a granitic-gneiss-greenstone basement of Early Proterozoic (~1,800 Ma) to Archean age, the Campos Gerais Complex, and a Late Proterozoic metasedimentary cover, the Bambuí Group, which represents a politic-carbonate platform sequence. A review of the stratigraphic nomenclature applied to all the above metasedimentary sequences suggests that the term Araxá Group should be utilized for the rocks of the Passos Nappe, and not the Araxá-Canastra Group, which has been used by many workers. In the intermediate tectonic unit the name Canastra Group is recommended to replace the two terms Carmo do Rio Claro Metasedimentary Sequence and Serra da Boa Esperança Sequence. A low angle foliation, parallel to the thrust surfaces, is recognized in each of the three units. The development of this foliation was partially coeval for the three tectonic units. In addition, the structural pattern becomes more complex upward from the basal autochthonous to the uppermost allochthonous tectonic unit. The structural pattern of the Passos Nappe is mainly characterized by a low angle foliation, that generally parallels the litostratigraphic units of the nappe, and by an associated WNW mineral/stretching lineation. A noncoaxial strain history and a tectonic transport of about 150 km to ESE are well constrained by shear sense indicators. Two sets of open to gentle, low plunge, upright folds are superimposed on the main foliation, which has W-NW and NNW-NE axial trends. The nappe structures are grouped into four deformation phases, D1 to D4. The nappe transport and the main foliation are D2 related. An inverted metamorphic gradient, medium greenschist to upper amphibolite facies, is typical to the Passos Nappe. Geothermobarometric data indicate 486°C - 6 kbar near the nappe's base, and an increasing temperature and pressure conditions up to 739°C - 11.2 kbar, near the top of nappe. Deflection of isotherms in the subduction zone and continuous expulsion of more high pressure rocks to shallow crustal levels, due a strong noncoaxial shear, are believed to have caused this inverted metamorphism. Litostratigraphic, structural and metamorphic data suggest that the Passos Nappe consists of sedimentary rocks deposited on a passive continental margin; these were subsequently deformed and metamorphosed in a subduction zone, and then, squeezed out to a shallow crustal level during the continental collision of the Brasiliano Cycle.
