Abstract in English
The region of Franca is located on the northeastern border of Paraná basin in the State of São Paulo. The geological units of Paraná basin are formed by volcanic and sedimentary rocks where several smectite clay occurences, mainly in Restinga are placed, Pedregulho and Serra da Faquinha. The subjects of this work were the caracterization of the clay occurences, and their relationship with geological and geomorphological evolution, deposit types, and technological characteristics, as well as the reserves evaluation. A great deal of technical activities were done, such as geological mapping, shallow wells and sampling, and laboratorial analysis and experiments. Through geological studies two different types of clay deposits: residual and sedimentary could be identified. The residual ore deposit is related to weathered basaltic rocks of Serra Geral formation, sited at Serra da Faquinha (NE of Franca). The sedimentary ore deposits are related to post-basaltic sedimentary sequence (Unidade Franca) and occur as mudstones and sandy mudstones in Restinga (SW of Franca) and Pedregulho (North of Franca), respectively. The technological characterization has shown that the clays can be used in several fields, mainly as activated clay for decoloring vegetable oils. As far as the reserves are concerned the best quality deposit was evaluated at around 440,000 tons of clayey material compound essentially by smectites.
