Abstract in English
The present study has been carried out on an area situated on terrains composed of schists rich in quartz, where fruits are cultivated with the intense use of pesticides. The aims of this study were to observe the behavior of arsenic, copper, lead and zinc in the unsaturated and saturated zones under tropical climate. The presence of these metals was analyzed on the: rainwater, pesticides, litter, weathered profile and waters of the unsaturated and saturated zones. At two different sites wells were drilled and porous cups were installed at various depths. At one site tensiometers were also installed and a rainwater collector was placed. To recognize the retention mechanism of these metals, the profiles were analyzed for mineralogical, chemical and physical characteristics. At depths of different textures and structures, soil samples were collected for analysis of contents of arsenic, lead, copper, zinc, clay, organic matter and the mineralogical composition was also determined. During the period of one year, rainwater and waters from the unsaturated and saturated zones of the sites, were monthly analyzed. The results showed that the origin of the studied metals are: arsenic and zinc from the weathered rocks; copper from the applied pesticides and lead from the atmosphere. The iron contents of the soil are responsible for the retention of copper, lead and zinc. The clay minerals retain arsenic and the organic matter, however with low values at both sites, retains the copper on the superficial layers. The concentration of these metals in waters of unsaturated and saturated zones is very low and in the pesticides only copper is present with high concentrations. Litter has large concentration of accumulated copper, releasing it during the year, in small amounts. Arsenic and zinc in the waters of the unsaturated and saturated zones are furnished by the soil, copper by the pesticides and from the atmosphere, mobilized by the infiltrating rainwater and by the water circulating in the unsaturated and saturated zones. In these waters lead showed high concentrations and the other metals, generally, had quite low values, suggesting occurrence of retention on the soil of the unsaturated zone.
