Fixação e mobilidade de espécies de mercúrio no sistema sedimento/Água do mangue no município de Cubatão, São Paulo

Sedimentologia

Abstract in English
The study area, is especially degraded due to the continuous release of effluent in the Santos Bay, Cubatão River etc. coming from diffuse sources of mercury emission, besides the urban and industrial, very close occupation. Once presence of the mercury was detected in the estuary, were made studies of the geological characteristics and local physical-chemical parameters, in order to determine the behavior of the mercury in this environment. The mineralogical assembly is composed essentially by quartz, micaceous mineral and siltic-loamy fragments associated to the Complexo Costeiro. Pyrite presence, organic matter and value of oxide-reduction potential, indicated mercury stability under the form of 'Hg IND. (aq)' and HgS. The negatives surperficial loads of the colloidal particles associated to the clay minerals facilitate the adsorption of mercury ionic and/or complex. The mercury is associate to the organic matter in the sediments and in the muds it has little influence in your behavior. The oxide-hydroxides a little contribute to the mercury fixation in the sediments, but they are decisive in the muds. The ionic strength just influences on the mobility ofo the mercury in the places subject to the variation of the tide. It was verified experimentally that salt presence acts in the mercury adsorption in the principal minerals of the area (caulinite and gibbsite).
