Abstract in English
This work is a study on the weathering of the São João do Piauí Precambrian basic-ultrabasic massif, which occurs in southeast Piauí, Brazil. This massif is of the "Alpine" type and comprises serpentinites surrounded by gabbros, olivinic-gabbros and diorites. The environment in which weathering occurs is characterized by a semi-aride climate, having high temperatures aII the year round and a mean annual rainfall of 600mm concentrated in only three months. The topography is dominated by a gently unduIating surface developed upon the crystalfine basement; projecting upwards from this surface are sedimentary rocks in form of cuestas and plateaus and the São João do Piauí massif with gentle slopes and some abrupt scarps. The soil is thin and poor; the vegetation is of the caatinga type. Weathering forms thin profiles at the margins of the plateau and very thick profiles on the middle hillsides, foot hills and lower plains. The top of the massif is tabular and sustained by a thick "silcrete" IeveI; beneath the sílcrete, thick profiles are developed. This siIcrete is an erosional vestige of ancient profiles. In the first stages, the minerals of lowest stability are weathered (brucite, carbonates and microcrystalline serpentine). In the saprolite facies, the total weathering of the three types of serpentine minerals occurs, microcrystalline serpentine first, followed by fibrous serpentine and finally by vein serpentine. The weathering products of these mafic silicates are nontronite, which itself shows incipient weathering to goethite. The superficial horizon facies is rich in crystaÌline oxides and hydroxides of Fe, Mn, AI e Co (mainly goethite), structured as oöids and contains smalI quantities of smectites. The geochemical evolution is characterized by a pronounced loss of magnesium oxide and by retention of silica and iron. The weathering process also favors downward. movement of silica derived from the silcrete and promotes marked silicification in the profiles of the plateau, upperhiIlsides and middle hillsides. This silicification does not reach the profiles of the foothills and plains nor the wethering front. The minor elements in general, behave like the residual ones. The plateau and upper hillside profiles are unproductive. However, Ni-ore is found in the profiles of the middle hillsides, foothills and plains. Ni-enrichment is results from a contributions from present weathering and from the Ni stock in the ancient profiles. As a function of the geochemical balance, calculated throught the proportions of the amount lost in the different facies, the elements show the following mobility scale: Mg > Ni> Si > Mn, Co > Fe, Al , Cu, Cr. The type of weathering as indicated by the principal neoformed minerals, may be called smectitization (bissialitization), with incipient evolution towards lateritization. The horizons of, altered rock, coarse saprolite and fine saprolite constitue a Ni-sílicate ore with estimated reserves of 20. '20POT6t' and a Ni content of 1.57%.
