Acreditava-se que a reparação do osso alveolar durante a movimentação ortodôntica só ocorresse após a diminuição da carga aplicada. No entanto, recentemente foi observado reparação do osso alveolar utilizando força contínua. Osteopontina é uma proteína não colágena da matriz com importante papel na remodelação óssea. Para analisar as reações no periodonto de sustentação e a distribuição de OPN, uma força contínua de 15cN foi aplicada aos primeiros molares superiores de ratos por 12d, 15d e 18d. Como controle, outros animais não tiveram seus molares movimentados. As maxilas foram processadas para análise ultra-estrutural morfológica, imunocitoquímica para OPN e histoquímica para fosfatase ácida resistente ao tartarato. No tempo inicial do estudo não foram encontradas reabsorções radiculares. Nos tempos intermediário e final, no entanto, reabsorções radiculares estavam presentes e aumentavam sua severidade com o tempo. Além disso, foi observado sinal de reparação do cemento. A expressão de OPN apresentou-se aumentada na superfície óssea e radicular.

It is believed that repair during orthodontic movement occurs after decreasing of force. However, signs of repair in alveolar bone submitted to continuous orthodontic force have been recently observed. Osteopontin is a major noncollagenous matrix protein that plays a role in physiological remodeling and mechanical stress. In order to test periodontal reactions and the distribution of OPN, a continuous 15cN force was applied to upper first rat molars for 12d, 15d, 18d, while other rats did not have their molars moved as a control. Maxillae were processed for ultrastructural analysis, immunocytochemistry for OPN and tartarate-resistant acid phosphatase histochemistry. Ultrastructural analysis revealed root resorption at 15d and 18d. Deep lacunae appeared in some regions of the pressure area after 18 days, most of them reaching the underlying root dentine. Signs of repair were detected concomitant with tissue damage and resorption of the root surfaces. At all times studied, overexpression of OPN was observed recovering alveolar bone and root surface.
