O presente estudo objetivou investigar a relação genética entre linhagens isoladas de infecções endodônticas e sistêmicas, bem como sua correlação com marcadores de virulência e resistência antimicrobiana. As linhagens genéticas de 40 isolados clínicos de E. faecalis foram determinadas por Multilocus sequence typing. Clusters virulentos foram investigados por PCR quanto à presença do polimorfismo do operon da cápsula, genes associados à virulênciae resistência antimicrobiana. A maioria dos isolados sistêmicos pertencia ao complexo clonal 2, eram produtores de cápsula e carregavam muitos genes de virulência/resistência. Por outro lado, isolados endodônticos apresentaram uma maior diversidade genética, eram em sua maioria não-capsulados e com poucos genes de virulência. Concluímos que isolados endodônticos de E. faecalis apresentaram um perfil genético e de virulência diferente dos clusters patogênicos de pacientes hospitalizados, provavelmente devido a especialização ao nicho de colonização conferida principalmente por regiões variáveis no genoma.

The aim of the present study was investigate the genetic relation between lineages isolated from endodontic and systemic infections, as well as its correlation with virulence markers and antibiotic resistance. The genetic lineages of 40 E. faecalis clinical isolates were determined by Multilocus sequence typing. Virulent clusters were investigated by PCR for the presence of capsule operon polymorphism, genes associated to virulence and antibiotic resistance. Most systemic isolates belonged to clonal complex 2, were capsule-producers and carried many virulence/resistance genes. On the other hand, endodontic isolates presented a greater genetic diversity, were mostly non-capsulated and carried few virulence genes. We conclude that endodontic isolates of E. faecalis showed a different genetic and virulence profile of pathogenic clusters of hospitalized patients, probably due to a specialized niche colonization conferred primarily by variable regions in the genome.
