O cerrado brasileiro é um bioma ameaçado, correndo sérios riscos de destruição. Este trabalho investiga as atitudes e condutas de produtores rurais em relação às áreas naturais de cerrado (Reservas Legais) e matas ripárias (Áreas de Proteção Permanente) do Assentamento Reunidas, Promissão, SP, e identifica as ações locais que poderiam promover o desenvolvimento sustentável. Foram entrevistadas 53 famílias. Através de sensoriamento remoto e de técnicas de geoprocessamento, foi produzido um mapa de uso e ocupação das terras e outro mapa de quantificação da cobertura vegetal nas APPs. Os resultados indicam que todas as áreas dos lotes são aproveitadas economicamente com cultivo ou pasto. As APPs apresentam regiões com vegetação rala, as quais correspondem às áreas degradadas, fruto da invasão do gado, fogo, corte de madeira, conforme revelado nas entrevistas e visitas a campo. A análise qualitativa dos dados mostrou que a maioria dos entrevistados conhece fauna e flora local e freqüenta as áreas de proteção, as quais estão fortemente ameaçadas pelas atividades agropecuárias. Embora a lógica econômica permeie as atitudes dos pequenos produtores, parece haver a vontade de conservar os fragmentos, em função tanto das imposições da lei (fiscalização e multas ambientais) quanto da apreciação e usufruto dos benefícios ecológicos e utilitários da natureza. A construção de um Indicador de atitude conservacionista permitiu identificar como diferentes opiniões e comportamentos podem se combinar, resultando em atitudes mais ou menos favoráveis à conservação. No entanto, a falta de consistência do indicador (α= 0,24) indica que as variáveis escolhidas não mensuram o mesmo objeto, sugerindo novas investigações na construção do Indicador, além de assinalar as dificuldades de formulação de uma grandeza unidimensional que contenha expressões de atitudes conservacionistas. A conservação e recuperação destas áreas dependem dos moradores locais, que parecem não conhecer toda a potencialidade e cuidados de que o cerrado precisa. O perfil destes moradores e as estruturas físicas e sociais do Assentamento indicam ações possíveis no sentido do desenvolvimento sustentável.

The Brazilian cerrado is a biome in danger and this study proposes to examine the measures that could be taken to induce sustainable development in the Reunidas settlement of Promissão, municipality of São Paulo. The attitudes of local residents with regards to the conservation of the remaining areas of cerrado vegetation (Legal Reserves – RLs and Pemanent Protected Areas – APPs) have been investigated through interview surveys of 53 rural producers. Remote sensing and geoprocessing techniques were resorted to in mapping out the state of conservancy of the APPs and the use of land within the plots: the results indicated a predominance of crops and pastures. The classified APP map shows areas of thin vegetation that have been disturbed by fire, cattle grazing, weed invasion and wood extraction, all of which became apparent after the interview surveys and field work were concluded. From the results obtained it is clear that the protected areas are frequently being used for purposes of leisure, for collecting medicinal plants, for a supply of firewood and cattle pastures. Although the attitudes of the peasants are influenced by economic factors, they seem to be in favor of the cerrado areas and are concerned about the visits of the environmental authorities. An attitude index on conservation was calculated and showed a combination of different opinions and reactions, which led either to a more positive or negative attitude in terms of the process of conservation. Nevertheless, the low consistency of this index (α= 0,24) indicated that the variables selected are not always applicable to the same object, making it clear that there are difficulties involved in arriving at na index that would be satisfactory with respect to attitudes towards conservation. Conservation and rehabilitation of the above mentioned areas are dependent upon the knowledge of the local residents, who it seems are not aware of the potential of these areas and the care they require. In conclusion, the profile of the settlers combined with the physical and social structures of the settlement itself suggest that it is possible to take measures that would eventually lead to a continuous development of the biome.
