Taxonomy
Resumé en anglais
The genus Aburria Reichenbach, 1853, belongs to the family Cracidae, representing the sister-taxon of the genera Penelope and Penelopina. It includes about seven taxa occurring in all South American countries (except for Chile and Uruguay), as well as in the Trinidad island. These birds are associated to forest habitats (humid Tropical forests, forests at high elevations and gallery forests in the Cerrado), showing habitat preference for the canopy in such formations. The taxa of the genus Aburria are characterized by the nude face and a well developed crest (except for Aburria aburri), a wattle on the neck and the black, shiny and iridescent plumage. The taxonomy and systematics of the genus Aburria are controversial, and there is not a consensus regarding how many valid taxa it includes. Only a few studies provided insights to individual and geographic variation, and properly describing the coloration of the ornaments and nude areas of the face has been a difficult task already observed in the first historical descriptions. The present study brings a taxonomic revision of the genus Aburria, aiming to redefine its taxa and their geographic distribution. A sample of 302 stuffed specimens of Brazilian and international institutions was examined considering qualitative and quantitative characters of external morphology. On the basis of the Phylogenetic Species Concept, the present analysis allowed the recognition of seven full species: Aburria aburri (Lesson, 1828), Aburria cujubi (Pelzeln, 1858), Aburria cumanensis (Jacquin, 1784), Aburria grayi (Pelzeln, 1868), Aburria jacutinga (Spix, 1825), Aburria nattereri (Reichenbach, 1862) e Aburria pipile (Jacquin, 1784). The most informative characters to the diagnosis of these taxa are related to color and shape of the crest feathers, color and shape of the wattle, and the white pattern of the wings. Based on these data, the range of the Aburria species were redefined, representing important information to the detection of sampling gaps, as well as to the delineation of conservation programs.
