A biodiversidade de cianobactérias e algas fitoplanctônicas foi estudada em duas das maiores represas da Região Metropolitana de São Paulo (RMSP): Billings e Guarapiranga, que fornecem água para o abastecimento de milhões de pessoas. As amostras foram coletadas bimensalmente, em pontos próximos à captação da Sabesp, durante o período de janeiro/2004 a dezembro/2004. As amostras foram filtradas com rede de plâncton de 20m de abertura de malha, preservadas em formol e depositadas no Herbário do Instituto de Botânica (SP). Foram identificados, descritos e ilustrados, 84 táxons para as represas Billings (Braço Taquacetuba) e Guarapiranga, sendo: 36 de Chlorophyceae (43%); 17 de Cyanobacteria (20%); 13 de Euglenophyceae (15,5%); 7 de Bacillariophyceae (8,5%); 5 de Zygnematophyceae (6%); 3 de Xantophyceae (3,5%); 2 de Dinophyceae (2,5%) e 1 de Chrysophyceae (1%). Vinte e três táxons foram considerados como primeiras referências para as represas estudadas. Nove espécies de cianobactérias potencialmente tóxicas foram identificadas para as duas represas. O resultado do índice de similaridade de Sörensen apontou alta similaridade entre as floras fitoplanctônicas de ambas as represas.

Biodiversity of planktonic cyanobacteria and algae in two of the greatest reservoirs from the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (RMSP), Billings and Guarapiranga, which supply water for millions of people was studied. The samples were collected every two months, in a specific site (Sabesps water sourcing) in both reservoirs, from January to December 2004. The samples were filtered using a plankton net (20m) and were preserved with formaldehyde. The studied samples were kept in the Herbarium of the Institute of Botany (SP). Eighty-four taxa were identified, described and illustrated: thirty-six belong to Chlorophyceae (43%); seventeen to Cyanobacteria (20%); thirteen to Euglenophyceae (15.5%); seven to Bacillariophyceae (8.5%); five to Zygnematophyceae (6%); three to Xantophyceae (3.5%); two to Dinophyceae (2.5%) and one to Chrysophyceae (1%). Twenty three taxa were considered as new references to the studied reservoirs and nine potentially toxic species of cyanobacteria were identified. The Sorensen index showed high similarity between the phytoplanktonic floras of both reservoirs.
