Abstract in English
Application of the concept of guilds is considered especially useful in ecological studies because guilds group together organisms that have significant overlap in niche requirements and share resources. Guild ratings for Isoptera are non-existent except for functional groups or trophic groups, making detailed analysis of termite community structuring difficult. In this project, termites collected during an extensive temporal replication (four years) were analyzed in a region of the Amazon Rainforest, Porto Velho, Rondônia, totaling 152 species. To develop guild classification, behavioral characters were identified through literature and field observations. Additionally, a detailed morphological study was performed using 30 individuals belonging to five independent colonies of each species for each of the castes (workers and soldiers), including also a morphometric study and an enteric valve morphology study. All information was compiled into matrices and an analysis protocol was proposed for guild classification. Due to the information gap, species with missing data in the data matrices were eliminated from the analyzes, leaving the final matrix with 99 species. To determine the contribution of the variables, FAMD (Factor Analysis of Mixed Data) analysis was used, selecting important variables for guild analysis. The matrices were separated into groups (soldiers or workers) and an ordering was used to determine the position of species in the multivariate space using variable blocks via MFA (Multi Factor Analysis). To describe the guilds, a Hierarchical Grouping on Principal Components (HCPC) analysis was employed using the first five axes derived from the MFA. As a result, six groups for soldiers and seven groups for workers were identified, representing 10 ecological guilds from the consolidation of the two classifications (workers and soldiers). The type of feeding, the colony site, the foraging form, the jaw morphology of the soldiers and the thorns present in the enteric valves were the variables that most contributed to the delimitation of the clusters. A strong phylogenetic signal was found in the classification. The composition of the 99 species in 10 ecological guilds and the description of guilds represents a new proposal in termite ecology, creating groups that can be tested for comparisons between environments. In addition, guild design in this study is a first step towards a better understanding of 16 termites in the living habitat and the ecological relationship between different neotropical regions.
