Abstract in English
This work presents a design for manufacturing air-coupled ultrasound transducers. Piezoceramics or piezocomposites were used as active elements vibrating in thickness mode. Epoxy, filtration membranes and aerogel were used as passive elements (matching layers). Piezoceramics show higher sensitivity than piezocomposites. However, piezocomposites show a higher bandwidth than piezoceramics. Porous membranes are easily handling and provide high quality layers for air coupling. Aerogel was studied as a potential matching layer too, but there were handling difficulties, resulting in a fragile material structure which was synthetized directly over the piezoelectric ceramics. The passive membranes and active elements were characterized and submitted to selection criteria for manufacturing process of prototypes. The electrical and mechanical behavior of a set of prototypes were measured at each stage of construction and compared to the theoretical results. The performance of the prototypes in transmission mode shows that the addition of ?/4 -thick porous membranes increased three to four times the energy transmission between the active element and air, besides an increase of approximately four times in the bandwidth. The numerical multiphysics results were compared with the experimental acoustic field measured from the air transducer prototype operating at 0.4 MHz, showing a good concordance between them.
