Abstract in English
This research scopes out productive and interpretative mechanisms which have made that some of the paintings were to be believed as allegories in the second half of the XIX century in Brazil. This analysis is focused on two of the works of the paraibano painter Pedro Américo (1843-1905): Estudo para Libertação dos Escravos (1989) e Pax et Concordia (1902). The scope out is extended to the conection that these paintings have with other works of the same conditions and with the conceptions of allegory in Brazil at the end of the XIX century.
