O conceito é estudado no contexto do trabalho teórico e artístico do fotógrafo, curador e educador Nathan Lyons, fundador da Visual Studies Workshop - Rochester (NY) 1969 - bem como de artistas e teóricos americanos do segunda metade do século XX.
