Abstract in English
Understanding the artist of performance as a social creation, developed by politics and cultural facts that are in direct relation with power relationships at the academy and the art market, this document follows -- from modernity to contemporary art -- the forms, ways and expectations of behaviour which have been related, regularly, to the performance art artist. These forms, which are here approached critically, reveal specific prototypes or models of conduct -- socially and artistically speaking -- based on expectations of the artist as eccentric, bizarre and/or transcendental subject, who taking them to their last consequences mythicises his/her figure, stablishing limits to what performance practice should be, plastering it to a range of specific actions and methods, taking a paradoxical shift opposite to the embracing nature that performance art, theoretically speaking, has. This work attempts to dismantle the old principles of performance art, supposedly linked with the "real" effect, the unquestionable presence of the artist and his/her body, the non-reproducibility of the performance event, the necessity of finding a transcendental value through the action, the opposition against the capital, etc. revealing that such "values" today are just present in forms of simulations. This situation may lead us to the conclusion of performance death and that these characteristics are also not necessary for a good performance art event to happen. Thoughts on re-formance starts from the premiss of impossible disassociation between the performance art artist and his/her art, pointing throughout history to three crisis of the artist/piece persona -- one of identy, another of auto-sabotage and a final one of hypertrophy of the body. Such crisis has answered back the paradigmatic principles of the practice through time, obligating us to re-think the artist persona as a fictitious role, socially re-enacted, that when becomes self-aware, reveals itself as totally self-controllable construction. Juxtaposing this awareness with an assessment on the role played by the photographic and video registers, the re-performance and the re-enactment on the three crisis of the artist, this document enunciates the agony of performance art, between the paradigmatic limits imposed to it, and proposes a new practice: the re-formance. This practice, based on the ideas of self-construction and pastiche, intends to give positive and creative values to imitation and copy in performance art and in life -- refused by the ontological principles of both practices -- that working from inside the institution could stand critically for overcoming the imposition of limits, methods and "truths", which performance art, mediated by its more influential characters, came to defend.
