The present study investigates dialogic methods observed in the transition from speech to writing, during the production of journalistic profiles in educational environments. The study aimed at identifying different solutions developed by students, the connection between these solutions and the students' level of literacy and, thus, finding ways to facilitate the development of writing. Data were gathered in two profile production workshops given by the author/researcher to Communications students with different literacy levels in São Paulo. The material regarding each participant on the research is formed by two recorded interviews with the profiled personages, two written profiles and, as a supplementary material, information about their reading and writing habits. Assuming that language and learning are inseparable from social experience (Bakhtin and Vygotsky), the research starts with the assumption that the journalistic genre profile, when turned into an object for teaching, may contribute to processes for the development of writing. This is because it involves face-to-face interaction (through interview), retextualization (transition from oral to written form), as well as content and compositional structure familiar to other genres dealing with the process of representing experiences. The central aspect observed in this corpus was the organization of topics, especially how the topic segments appear in the interview (oral) and in the profile (written). The study found the following retextualization operations (Marcuschi): maintenance (topic and sequence of topics repetition, use of direct speech, etc.); elimination; reformulation (topic reordering, lexical substitution, use of indirect speech); and also addition (interpretation, observation, comparison). The data analysis noted that there is a tendency that the interview participates on the production of profiles in different ways, according to the student's maturity level as a writer. The topic organization of the speech, in general, played a more important role among those writers less skilled in mastering the resources and strategies to writing. The study verified that the students with greater skills in mastering these strategies use the interview especially as a way of interaction, allowing the acquisition of knowledge. After confirming the assumption that, especially among less fluent students, the topic organization of speech tends to guide the topic organization of writing, the results enable the study to indicate specific ways for the organization of teaching in order to foster the production of more complex works.
