Abstract in English
Quantitative analysis of continuity between cement/dentin interface of different activation mode resin cements, when luted to fiber posts. Many factors can influence the bond integrity of posts luted into root canals. These include the difficulty of curing light to reach the most apical areas of root canals, polymerization contraction stresses, incompatibility between acidic adhesives and auto/dual-cured composites, anatomical variations of the root, problems regarding access, moisture level control and the peculiar characteristics of the root dentin substrate. Thus, it was the aim of the present investigation to perform a quantitative analysis of the continuity between resin cements and dentin interfaces, by means of scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis, in the following situations: after cementation, after MEK immersion, and after a 3-month water storage period. Forty bovine endodontically-treated incisors were randomly assigned to be luted with a fiber post and the following cements: Multilink, Variolink II, Enforce Dual and Enforce PV. After cementation, roots were longitudinally sectioned and replicas were prepared for SEM analysis. The same halves were immersed in MEK, replicated and evaluated. After 3 months water storage, a new set of replicas of the same halves were made and again analysed. The ratio between the total available bonding interface and the dentin interfaces that presented continuity with resin cement was then calculated. Significant lower values of continuity were found for Multilink (8,25%) and Variolink II (10,08%) when compared to Enforce Dual (25,11%) and Enforce PV (27,60%). The same trend was observed after immersion in MEK, with no significant changes. However, a significant decrease in continuity was observed after 3 month water storage for Multilink, Variolink II, Enforce Dual and Enforce PV (3,31%, 1,87%, 1,20%, 0,75%, respectively). An analysis of failure location depicted the majority of gaps at the apical and middle thirds before and after immersion in MEK. After 3 months gaps were also detected at the cervical third.
