Abstract in English
It is well known that some syndromes are associated with oral motor impairment and presence of comorbidities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of healthrelated quality of life (HRQoL) of a children and adolescents with Moebius syndrome (MS) and Down syndrome (DS). Fifty-eight (58) patients with MS and DS, aged 5 to 18 years (10.9 ± 3.9) and their respective caregivers. Caregivers answered a sociodemographic questionnaire for population assessment, and the PedsQL(TM) - Health Scale for HRQoL assessment. The OMAS (Oral Motor Assessment Scale) instrument was selected to evaluate oral motor conditions. The results showed that children and adolescents with oral functional difficulties had a negative impact on their physical ability (p-value = 0.005); the mean PedsQL scores for physical ability were statistically different between DS and MS, the latter with lower scores (p-value = 0.050). Visual impairments compromised physical ability, emotional conditions and school activity (p = 0.038; 0.020; 0.047, respectively) of the affected patients. Individuals with others comorbidities such as brain tumor, hydro and schizocephaly showed worse results of emotional conditions on HRQoL (p = 0.012). Our conclusions are that the caregivers of children and adolescent with MS has worse perceptions of HRQoL than DS; visual impairment, use of medications and the presence of other comorbidities may negatively impact the HRQoL. Regardless of chewing and swallowing dysfunction, patients have the ability to feed and nourish.
