Abstract in English
Breast cancer represents the main cause of death among women and 23% of all diagnosed cancer types. In men, this rare events totals 1% of cancer cases around the world. The aim was to describe and analyze the mortality trend due to male and female breast cancer in Regional Health Department XIII - Ribeirão Preto (DRS XIII - RP) between 1999 and 2010. This descriptive and ecological time series was based on secondary data, obtained from the Mortality Information System (MIS) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The trend analysis was processed after calculating male and female breast cancer mortality coefficients according to population size and standardized by age range per 100,00 inhabitants. SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software, version 17.0, was used to calculate the linear trend equations. In total, 1099 deaths due to breast cancer were identified. The highest levels were found in white, married women, between 40 and 69 years of age and less than seven years of education. Increased coefficients were observed in all cities, independently of the population size, and a concomitant rise in coefficient as the age range advanced. The results suggested an upward trend in breast cancer mortality rates according to population size and in the age ranges from 20 to 29 years, from 60 to 69 years and from 70 to 79 years, and a downward trend in the age ranges from 30 to 39 years, 40 to 49 years, 50 to 59 years and 80 years and older. The results indicate the need to put in practice more effective actions with a view to the early detection and control of breast cancer in a systemized manner
