A transição demográfica e epidemiológica trouxe consigo o aumento das condições crônicas no Brasil e no mundo e o câncer surge como um problema de grande impacto para a família, provocando sentimentos, dificuldades sócio-econômicas e acúmulo de tarefas aos familiares, particularmente aos cuidadores. Os objetivos desta pesquisa visaram compreender a percepção do grupo familiar de baixa renda em relação à sua experiência frente à presença do câncer no idoso e descrever a sua organização familiar no que se refere ao cuidado prestado a ele. Utilizou-se a abordagem qualitativa, com o uso da entrevista semi-estruturada como fonte de coleta de dados a três familiares de acordo com critérios de elegibilidade definidos nesta pesquisa. As informações foram analisadas pela Análise Temática, de onde emergiram quatro categorias: 1. sentimentos da família em relação ao diagnóstico do câncer; demonstrando o sofrimento, a dor, a revolta diante do impacto do câncer e a aceitação desta condição por alguns familiares; 2. o câncer e sua relação com a fé: as cuidadoras primárias expressaram sua religiosidade perante a doença de seu marido e de sua mãe. 3. dificuldades surgidas no contexto familiar em decorrência da doença, envolvendo os aspectos financeiros relacionados ao alto custo da doença e 4. mudanças na organização familiar frente ao processo de cuidar: evidenciando o processo de desorganização familiar que a doença provoca, o papel do cuidador primário no processo de cuidar e o papel da mulher desempenhado as atividades de cuidar. Concluímos que famílias que têm renda mensal entre um e dois salários mínimos com doentes acometidos por câncer, merecem uma atenção especial dadas as singularidades presentes no intercurso de uma enfermidade de longa duração como o câncer. É necessário pensar que uma maior aproximação e seguimento destas famílias tenham frutos importantes para a superação ou minimização de aspectos que são inerentes ao processo de cuidar, desenvolvendo habilidades específicas para uma melhor qualidade de vida do cuidador primário e conseqüentemente da família e do familiar doente.

The epidemiologic and demographic transition brought with itself the increase of chronic conditions in Brazil and in the world and, the cancer emerges as a problem of great impact for the family, provoking pains, socio-economic difficulties and the accumulation of tasks for the family members and to the family carer. This research aimed at understanding the perception of the family group of low income in relation to their experience before the presence of cancer in the elderly and describes the family organization in terms of the care provided for the ill. It was used a qualitative approach, with semi-structured interview, applied to three family members according to the criteria of legibility defined in this research. The data were analyzed by the Thematic Analysis, from which four categories emerged: 1.feelings of the family in relation to the diagnosis of the cancer, in which demonstrated the feelings as suffering, pain, disgust before the impact of cancer and the acceptance of this condition by some family members; 2. changes in the family organization before the process of care, showing the process of family disorganization that the disease provokes and the role of the primary carer in the process of care, the role of the woman performing the activities of care. 3. difficulties emerged in the family context deriving from the disease: involving financial aspects related to the high cost that the disease brings to the families and in relation to the treatment of the disease. 4. the cancer and its relation with faith, in which the primary carers express their religiosity before the disease of their husband and of their mother. We conclude that the families who have monthly income varying from one and two minimum ages and are bearers of ill people who have been inflicted by cancer, deserve a special attention given the singularities in the process of the treatment of an illness of long duration as the cancer. It is necessary to think that a close proximity and assistance to these families have important results to overcome and minimize the aspects that are inherent to the process of care and attention of the ill and of the primary carer, developing specific abilities for a better quality of life of the primary carer and consequently to the family and to the ill.
